The RPG & DB2 Summit - Fall 2018

With intense focus on taking their IBM i applications into the future, development pros from around the world convened at the RPG & DB2 Summit in Chicago to learn the latest IBM i capabilities.

Interactive discussions and humor made the week fly by. A healthy mix of seasoned RPGers and those new to IBM i development soaked up the education like sponges, sharing tips with each other during breaks and coalescing quickly into family.

Take a photo tour here of all our activities.

We honored 11 Super Alumni - those exhibiting a strong commitment to ongoing education. Several IT executives from the CIO Summit also joined us on Tuesday.

Four IT students from Muskegon Community College took advantage of a grant from Maxava to explore IBM i as a career. They said they were energized by the warm welcome, and some even received internship offers.

Some noteworthy trends surfaced at this Summit, too, including:

  • More .NET and Java developers onsite for cross-training on the IBM i
  • Movement past the "why" of open source on IBM i and into the "how do we proceed?" phase
  • A growing need to integrate with other platforms and applications
  • Record attendance in the updated database track (Thanks Rob and Jim!)

The Open Source Squad helped attendees get started with open source tools.

On the lighter side, ISVs entertained us during the Gong Show while introducing us to their IBM i development tooling and services.

As part of IBM i's 30th anniversary celebration, the RPG Five performed My App's Refaced, Shouldn't It Be RPG, and a tongue-in-cheek tweak at Summit instructors to stop pushing modern tools - Teachers! Leave them geeks alone!. Many thanks to band members Alan Seiden, Ted Holt, Barbara Morris, Steph Rabbani and Kath Hewitt!

Scott Forstie's extra-large handouts also got a good laugh, as did many of the door prizes.

Ted Holt made us smile with his traditional "cherry on top" end-of-conference sing-along. Kudos, Ted!

As always, the exceptional experts who round out the Summit family deserve praise for sharing their expertise so freely. Scott Klement, Barbara Morris, Ted Holt, Scott Forstie, Rob Bestgen, Liam Allan, Alan Seiden, Mike Pavlak, Jim Denton, Steph Rabbani . . . we couldn't do it without you!
