The RPG & DB2 Summit - Spring 2019

Southern hospitality welcomed the hard-working group of IBM i developers and IT executives who gathered in Charlotte for the CIO Summit and the 25th RPG & DB2 Summit in March.

Intent on learning the best ways to enhance and extend IBM i applications, they soaked up knowledge in workshops and sessions. Not even the lighting poltergeist that followed Susan around dimmed their focus.

Check out this photo tour of the week's activities. You'll find additional photos here.

It felt as much like a family reunion as a week of intensive learning. We met new Summit family members (including Australia-based Wan-Ju) and honored 8 Super Alumni for their commitment to ongoing education. Hats off to Nicole, Bjorn, Scott, Nass, Jim, Troy, Paul and Helder!

The exhibitors entertained us during the Gong Show and tutored us in IBM i development tooling.

Yet Summiteers still had the energy to snag speakers for 1-on-1 discussions, talk shop in small groups, and make the most of every learning opportunity.

Minds whirling, by Tuesday evening we were ready to relax and socialize. Wiki Stix masterpieces appeared, especially Boris' and Sven's windmill and Luoie's elaborate basketball player/hoop. Prizes flowed. (Everence developers are SO lucky!)

The RPG Five performed an ode to RPGers' work ethic and to the "brains down in Rochester." Many thanks to Alan Seiden, Ted Holt, Steph Rabbani, Bongo Paul Olson and Liam Allan.

Other favorite Summit traditions included the Summit family photo and Ted Holt's special way of kicking off the final session. This time, his sing-along featured an IBM i version of Those Were The Days. Kudos, Ted!

We noticed open source gaining traction. Mike Pavlak earned "King of the Workshops" status when his Python lab attendance squeaked ahead of SQL, RDi, and Service Programs. The Open Source Roundtable panel reported greater sophistication among participants, an increased breadth of activity, and more developers looking to make OSS technologies work well on IBM i. The Open Source Squad helped several people install and get started with Yum and other packages.

In the evenings, most took the opportunity to walk around the lake, explore the nearby restaurants and shops, and enjoy the (mostly) nice weather.

By the final day, Scott Forstie's and Paul Tuohy's classes engaged in a good-natured Battle of the Speakers, pitting jeers against applause.

As always, the exceptional experts who round out the Summit family deserve praise for sharing their expertise so freely. Scott Klement, Barbara Morris, Ted Holt, Scott Forstie, Rob Bestgen, Liam Allan, Alan Seiden, Mike Pavlak, Steph Rabbani, Charlie Guarino… we couldn't do it without you!
